Engaged | 3 Things To Do First

First things, first! You’re Engaged! Girl, take that ring selfie with your fiance and enjoy the moment! You’re only engaged once and before you get into any of the exciting nitty-gritty wedding planning stuff STOP and relax. Enjoy your moment with your fiance sharing the fun news with friends and family. Once you’ve screamed it to the mountain tops (or made it official on Instagram) that you are marrying your best friend it’s time to jump into what to do first. This preliminary step is uber important though! Don’t rush into it right away. Take a few days (or weeks) to let it soak in. Above all, have fun and revel in the moment… then start planning!

Enjoy The Moment!

Yes! You read that right! I’m not telling you to book any vendor, talk about budgets, or get into wedding planning. The first thing you should do after engaged is to simply enjoy the moment! You are only engaged for a short period of time and you should soak in all the wonderful feelings of being engaged before you have to start wedding planning. Once the planning begins, your engagement will feel like it flew by! You’re married forever but you are only engaged for a short amount of time. It deserves to be celebrated and enjoyed.

Now, this part is important. Enjoy the moment alone.

Take time to enjoy this new stage in your life with your new fiance, your family, and your closest friends. Wedding planning can be a wonderful time in your life but it can also be stressful. Before you jump into that season of your life of wedding planning, take time. Time to be excited for this new chapter in your life.

Pick Up The Phone

Yes, this goes back to my cheery intro to this blog post but let’s be real. Even if your grandma has Facebook, the last place she should hear this big wonderful news from is social media. Having that said – Give your parents, close friends, and family members a call so they can hear personally from you before everyone else. It’s just not a good feeling to hear (even joyful) news through social media. It’s a tad impersonal to those closest to you. Most importantly, make it a joyful memory to remember!

Talk About Your Budget

I know – it’s not as fun as flipping through bridal magazines or trying on dresses, but it’s the foundation for your whole event. However, Be realistic and set a BUDGET. Set your priorities before you start signing contracts and sending deposits. Having that said, most importantly – focus on making smart decisions and not decisions made out of excitement. When setting up your budget also start a list of your top priorities. You may want to set more money aside for your favorite vendor while budgeting other parts of your wedding. Not talking about your budget can also lead to heated discussions that were completely unnecessary and avoidable. In other words, Don’t skip this step!

My biggest tip for your budget is to not simply divide it evenly. For example, you book your venue and your balance is evenly split for the rest of your vendors. This will limit who you are able to book. Instead, my biggest suggestion to you is to prioritize what vendors are going to be the most important to you. If booking your favorite photographer is important, then prioritize that vendor and cut costs elsewhere. It’s important for you to feel confident in the vendors you will most value.
