I’m Engaged! Now What? Top 5 Things to Do First

First things, first! You’re Engaged! Girl, take that ring selfie with your fiance and enjoy the moment! You’re only engaged once and before you get into any of the exciting nitty-gritty wedding planning stuff STOP and relax. Enjoy your moment with your fiance sharing the fun news with friends and family. Once you’ve screamed it to the mountain tops (or made it Facebook official) that you are marrying your best friend it’s time to jump into what to do first. You’re probably left with this exact question “I’m Engaged! Now What? – well, that’s exactly why I wrote this blog post! This preliminary step is uber important though! Don’t rush into it right away. Take a few days (or weeks) to let it soak in. Above all, have fun and revel in the moment… then start planning! I’m Engaged Now What Top 5 Things to Do First

I'm Engaged! Now What? Top 5 Things to Do First

#1 Pick up the phone! You’re Engaged!

Yes, this goes back to my cheery intro to this blog post but let’s be real. Even if your grandma has Facebook, the last place she should hear this big wonderful news from is social media. Having that said – Give your parents, close friends, and family members a call so they can hear personally from you before everyone else. It’s just not a good feeling to hear (even joyful) news through social media. It’s a tad impersonal to those closest to you. Most importantly, make it a joyful memory to remember! #2 Insure that new sparkly rock on your finger.

Life happens. You will feel like crap if something was to ever happen to that ring right after he proposed though! It’s better to stay on the safe side. I found this post from The Knot to be very helpful about ring insurance. Skip this step entirely if your fiance was already on it and he did all of this when he picked it out (shout out to David for doing this when he picked out my ring!) #3 Have the Money talk. engaged

I know – it’s not as fun as flipping through bridal magazines or trying on dresses, but it’s the foundation for your whole event. However, Be realistic and set a BUDGET. Set your priorities before you start signing contracts and sending deposits. Having that said, most importantly – focus on make smart decisions and not decisions made out of exctiment. When setting up your budget also start a list of your top priorities. You may want to set more money aside for your favorite vendor while budgeting other parts of your wedding. Not talking about your budget can also lead to heated discussions that were completely unnecessary and avoidable. In other words, Don’t skip this step!

#4 Book a Venue… Set your date!

This is a two in one step! Now you may think that setting your date comes first but you will quickly find that you may call your top favorite venues just to find out they don’t have your preferred date in mind. Is your venue or date more important? For instance, David and I (just me if I’m being totally honest) really wanted to be married in a big classic chappel. The only one in our area only had a couple of dates available in our preferred wedding month, therefore we chose a date from their availability. It’s good to have a general timeframe in mind, but you’ll have much more flexibility to pick out the perfect place if you don’t lock yourself into an exact date.

#5 Book your TOP vendors. arried

Is having one particular photographer or florist super important to you? Many in-demand wedding vendors can book up more than a year in advance. Determine what’s most important to you, connect with them to make sure you’re a good fit, go ahead and get your dream vendors booked. Keep in mind that the only thing required to lock in your favorite must-have vendors is your deposit! For example, I offer a payment plan for those clients who have photography as a top vendor but they might have to re-prioritize their budget to book me, it’s just my way of helping! Ask your favorite vendors if they offer a payment plan. Some vendors don’t mind being able to help their clients in this way!
